Abstract

For children who are deaf or hard of hearing, today’s world is one of limitless opportunities. The rapid advent of technology combined with intensive therapy and education has completely revolutionized what is possible for these children. Universal newborn hearing screening has made it possible for hearing loss to be detected shortly after birth. Babies can be fitted with hearing aids as early as one month of age, and receive cochlear implants before their first birthday. After receiving intensive auditory, speech and language therapy, many are ready to enter mainstream schools by kindergarten – listening, learning and speaking on par with their peers with typical hearing.
