Abstract

The article summarizes the origin of volunteerism and its shortcomings. It delves into Atmashakti’s concept of the Activist Intervention Strategy with paid activism at its core and how it came up to bridge the volunteerism gap. Furthermore, it explores how the Activist Intervention Strategy has successfully built people’s collectives, mobilized people, and demonstrated the effectiveness of collective action and community mobilization. Lastly, it highlights the process of cadre building and how cadre-based movements can bring social change.

Author Biography

Man Mohan Singh, Atmashakti Trust

Koko Singh has travelled extensively through the Himalayas for over twenty-five years. Having opted out of the corporate main stream, he has been volunteering as a consultant to an NGO (SHRUTI), for over fifteen years now. This shift allowed him the time to indulge in his love for travel and this set of books is an effort to share the beauty and adventures of Himalayan travel. At present, he is the Managing Trustee of Atmashakti Trust. He is also a policy commentator on contemporary issues.
