Abstract

There is ample evidence that process design is critical for meaningful inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration. However, practitioners and researchers in transdisciplinary projects are usually overwhelmed with the complex human dynamics in participatory processes and are hardly trained in the sensitive dynamics of working with people. Therefore, this reflexive article extends our practical understanding of the process knowledge of transdisciplinary research by providing deep reflections on design decisions and their implications. We reflect on questions of the why, who, and how of design in transdisciplinarity and the consequences of narrowing or opening these spaces. Then, it dives into a single case and makes use of the opportunity to reflect on a transdisciplinary workshop that took place in June 2022 in a conventional shopping center in Berlin. The interactive space called Simply different fashion served to spark a conversation between visitors of the mall and interested stakeholders about a more sustainable textile industry. The authors of this conceptual work use a reflective journaling exercise that helped to stimulate thoughts about opening and closing spaces for transdisciplinarity. Finally, lessons learnt from practice and for process knowledge are highlighted to strengthen collaboration in overcoming wicked sustainability challenges.

Author Biographies

Felix Beyers, Research associate (Ph.D.), Transformative Spaces and Mindsets, Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - Germany. Corresponding Author: felix.beyers@rifs-potsdam.de

Felix Beyers started out as a post-doc in the Theory, Evaluation and Culture of Transdisciplinary Research group at the RIFS (former IASS) since December 2021 to deepen theory and design in transdisciplinary research processes. He is currently working in the Transformative Spaces and Mindsets research group on the design and exploration of transformative spaces. He previously completed his doctorate on the topic of "Political Challenges of a Textile Transformation" where he focused on collaborative governance and social learning between heterogeneous actors in multi-stakeholder initiatives for a sustainability transformation. In addition to his research activities, he worked in a youth education organization and teaches at universities using explorative and participatory methods.

Alina Lebherz, Student assistant (M.A.), Transformative Spaces and Mindsets, Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - Germany

Alina Lebherz studies Cultural History and Theory at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Since 2019 she researches at RIFS Potsdam (former IASS) on Transdisciplinarity in theory and practice. Her work is dedicated to the critical school of Transdisciplinarity that also considers historical transfer movements in view of the present. Currently she is part of the research group „Transformative Spaces and Mindsets“ by Thomas Bruhn. From 2017 to 2018 Alina Lebherz worked at the cluster of excellence „Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An interdisciplinary laboratory“ at Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik. Occasionally she also operates as a freelance editor for Schaubude Berlin. She recently worked at RomaTrial e.V. as assistant to the artistic director for Roma Day in April 2023.

Thomas Bruhn, Research group leader (Ph.D.), Transformative Spaces and Mindsets, Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - Germany

Thomas Bruhn is a physicist who is leading the transdisciplinary research group "transformative spaces and mindsets" at RIFS Potsdam. Coming originally from an interest in self-organization in complex systems his research now focuses on how to design and conduct effective process knowledge for transdisciplinary research, particularly for groups with highly diverse perspectives with regards to their professional, social and cultural backgrounds. His research group conducts and investigates co-creative formats, e.g., in the context of the UNFCCC climate conferences and other highly contested settings. He is a trained facilitator in various group formats including psycho-dynamic leadership and consulting. Before joining RIFS, Thomas conducted research on semiconductor nanomaterials in Berlin, Rome, and Marseille.
